Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
Country race meets, wine tasting, markets, fishing and festivals are just some of the experiences featured in the 7th edition of the Western Downs Touring Guide.
Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said with almost three quarters of holiday makers to Queensland travelling by road, guides like the Western Downs Touring Guide were an essential tool.
“This guide includes travelling tips, maps, places to stay and a list of all the events and festivals – all the information you need to plan a Western Downs adventure,” Ms Boyle said.
“The guide highlights the region’s historic rural towns, including Chinchilla, Goondiwindi, Injune, Miles, Surat, Millmerran, Mitchell, Roma, St George, Tara and Wandoan as well as Carnarvon Gorge National Park.”
Ms Boyle said the Western Downs attracted more than 465,000 domestic visitors in the year ended December 2007, up 16 percent from last year, with an average length of stay of three nights, representing a 21 percent increase from 2007.
“This is an exciting time for the region as visitors are increasingly looking for new and different travel experiences,” she said.
Interim Chief Executive Officer of Toowoomba and Golden West Tourism, Geoff Thompson said 2008 was a fantastic time to visit the Western Downs region.
“Following the much needed rain we had early in the year, the Western Downs is now wonderfully green and abundant with wildlife and flora,” he said.
“Western Downs operators are looking forward to a great year showcasing to visitors the best the region has to offer.”
The Western Downs Touring Guide 7th Edition is available through visitor information centres throughout Queensland, via the Western Downs website www.westerndownsholidays.info or by calling 1800 688 949.
