JOINT STATEMENT

Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh

Members of the Queensland Police Service with experience in various specialised fields have been recognised for years of dedicated service, during a ceremony at the Community Cabinet held at Redcliffe today.

Premier Anna Bligh, and Police Minister Judy Spence, joined Assistant Commissioner Graham Rynders in presenting National Police Medals to six officers from the Caboolture and Redcliffe Districts.

The medal recipients have performed duties in a range of areas within the QPS, including: Police Communications Centres, Forensic Services, General Duties, Criminal Investigation Branch, Child Protection Investigation Unit and Specialist Services.

Ms Bligh said: “Together, these men and women represent over 100 years of policing experience in Queensland.

“Their professionalism and experience gained through long and dedicated years of service is gratefully acknowledged.

“The communities these men and women work in can take comfort in the fact their local officers and staff have such a great understanding of policing – and are well equipped to protect the community.”

Minister Spence said the medal recipients are an example of the calibre of men and women serving in the Queensland Police Service.

“In Queensland we have one of the best police services in the world – and the value of this organisation lies in its employees,” Ms Spence said.

“These officers have each achieved a lot during their years of service and made a difference in the communities they have served.

“For example, Sergeant Aaron Firth (who is currently a Shift Supervisor at Redcliffe Station with previous experience in Scenes of Crime) has recently been awarded an Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate for rescuing a drowning male off Moreton Island.

“Sergeant Terry Wyatt has also been acknowledged previously for his involvement in the Redcliffe District Tactical Crime Squad. He received the District Officer’s Certificate in recognition of the success of the squad’s operations.

“And Detective Senior Constable Stephen Marshall (who is currently relieving as Detective Acting Sergeant, Officer in Charge, Deception Bay Child Protection Investigation Unit) previously received Notable Commissioner’s Awards for apprehending and disarming an armed person in 1997, saving a woman from being hit by an oncoming train in 2001, and for running Operation Swipe targeting ‘graffiti gangs’ during 1996-1997. The operation netted 68 offenders on 1886 charges.

“These officers have made outstanding contributions to this state – and it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to recognise their years of service.”

Member for Redcliffe Lillian van Litsenburg said: “It is great to have the opportunity to thank our local police for their dedication and commitment.

“Everyday these officers go above and beyond to serve the people of this region and I know the local community appreciates their efforts to keep us all safe,” she said.
