Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Flick of switch to improve road safety in Bundaberg

Motorists travelling along FE Walker Street and Elliott Heads Road will be using a new set of traffic signals from Monday (April 28).

Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said the traffic signals were part of a $5.5 million upgrade of Bundaberg–Port Road, at Elliott Heads Road and Boundary Street, including intersection improvements and the installation of two sets of traffic lights.

Mr Pitt said the upgraded road would service the needs of this growing area and provided a vital link between Bundaberg and the coastal communities of Bargara, Elliott Heads, Burnett Heads and the Bundaberg Port.

“This first set of traffic lights at FE Walker and Elliott Heads Road will be switched on after peak hour on Monday morning," Mr Pitt said.

"The second set of traffic lights – at the Boundary Street and Walker Street intersection – will be switched on during the final stages of the project.

“The project is expected to be completed within the next few weeks and will improve traffic flow, particularly during peak times, and will also improve safety for pedestrians who will now be able to use the signalised crossing.

"The intersection improvements and installation of traffic lights and a dividing median strip have increased general road user and pedestrian safety."

Mr Pitt thanked project staff for their efforts in completing the project while traffic was using the road.

"Given the volume of traffic that uses Bundaberg–Port Road, this was a challenging project and the work undertaken has been first-class," he said.

"With work having started in October 2007, its completion on time and on budget is a fine example of the State Government’s commitment to connecting Queensland."

Mr Pitt thanked the community and business owners for their support and patience during the upgrade and congratulated contractor, RoadTek, for its hard work.
