Fit4fun program shapes a fitter future for kids
Young Queenslanders are being encouraged to eat healthy food and get more active as part of a fundraiser to help sick children.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford today officially launched the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation’s fit4fun 2008 program at West End State School.
“I’ve declared 2008 the Year of Physical Activity for all school children so I’d like to see as many young people as possible get involved to help this worthy cause,” Mr Welford said.
“Not only will students improve their own health and well-being, they’ll also be raising much-needed funds to help the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“The Foundation launched this program in 2004 and it has been a great success.
“West End State School has been involved in the program for the last three years and this year all classes will take part – a great example for other schools.
“Our Government is keen to promote healthier lifestyles for school children and this program dovetails well with our Year of Physical Activity and the introduction of our Smart Moves program, which also starts this year.
“As part of Smart Moves, primary school students will get active for 30 minutes a day, while secondary students will participate in physical activity for at least two hours a week.
“Research shows that regular physical activity has health benefits for young people and can also help with their ability to learn.
“Children and young people who make healthy lifestyle choices now are more likely to continue these healthy habits in later life.
fit4fun ambassadors, Michael Ennis of the Broncos and Janelle Lawson of the Queensland Firebirds, also attended the launch to help encourage students to lead a healthy lifestyle.
fit4fun runs during the month of May with each participating school nominating a week in the month to implement the program.
