Premier
The Honourable Anna Bligh
Visiting Toowoomba is always an up-lifting experience and now the rest of Australia knows so, Premier Anna Bligh said tonight after Queensland’s Garden City was named Australia’s Tidiest Town.
Toowoomba won the prestigious national title at the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards in Hobart (Saturday).
“There’s no sweeter moment than to stroll through the State’s Garden City in Spring. The beautiful aromas and visual delight of its many private and public gardens coming into bloom is always most memorable,” said the Premier.
“The vivid warm colours match the city’s welcome. Well done to all Toowoomba residents.”
“You and your combined efforts, especially given on-going drought, have done your magnificent city, and indeed this State, proud,” she said
Member for Toowoomba North, Attorney-General Kerry Shine joined the Premier in congratulating Toowoomba residents.
“Well done to all. This is not just for a small group of people this is deservedly for everyone,” he said.
“Successive Premiers have helped us with funding for inner-city upgrades, especially Ruthven and Margaret streets, enhanced sporting facilities and on-going support for the Carnival of Flowers and the Gospel Music Festival,” said Mr Shine.
The Premier and Mr Shine both also praised former Mayor Di Thorley and her councils for their civic leadership.
“Toowoomba has had some tough times lately with drought and water supply responses and this is a welcome prize for a deserving community,” said Mr Shine.
The Premier said that Toowoomba’s effort set a new benchmark.
Toowoomba’s water education program also earned it the national Water Conservation Award and its local Sustainable Home project earned it the national Environmental Innovation Award.
“Beautiful, smart and green – its got it all,” said Ms Bligh.
