The Honourable John Mickel

Jump on public transport to see Lions roar

Getting to the Gabba to see the Lions take on the Hawks tomorrow night is as easy as jumping on to public transport.

Minister for Transport John Mickel said extra services would be provided to ensure footy fans made it to and from the game.

“Public transport is the best way to get to the Gabba to see the Lions take on Hawthorn,’’ Mr Mickel said.

“People who grab a bus or a train to the game will get free travel on the night too – all they need to do is show their game ticket.’’

TransLink will provide shuttle services to cater for the increased commuter demand.

Mr Mickel said TransLink had successfully taken on major public transport challenges in past weeks.

“Three weeks ago more than 113,000 passengers were moved to and from games at the Gabba and Suncorp Stadium when matches were scheduled to be played on the same evening.

“This was achieved with a minimum of fuss despite the added challenge of the usual Friday night peak hour rush,’’ he said.

Mr Mickel said TransLink services catered for the huge demand, clearing crowds at both grounds within an hour.

"It just goes to show public transport really is the best way to get to the football."
