WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS SARINA ACID SULFATE SOIL STUDY

Natural Resources and Water Minister Craig Wallace today encouraged Sarina landholders, councils, developers and community organisations to attend a free workshop on Acid Sulfate soil mapping.

Minister Wallace said the Department of Natural Resources and Water would host the workshop on Tuesday 29 April, to provide an update on the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) project, Acid Sulfate Soil Risk Mapping for Central Queensland, and provide participants with general information on acid sulfate soils.

"Acid sulfate soils are the common name given to naturally occurring sediments and soils containing iron sulfides," Mr Wallace said.

"This workshop will assist industry and agriculture better cope with acid sulfate soils in the area by providing a general understanding of the nature, distribution and impact of these potentially harmful soils.

"During the workshop participants will visit some of the project mapping sites, inspect core samples, conduct pH tests on soil samples and hold discussions on the project results, including results of the groundwater monitoring program."

Minister Wallace said these soils generated sulfuric acid and released heavy metals when exposed to air due to drainage and other excavations.

"This is potentially damaging for the environment, engineering structures and even human health," he said.

The free half-day workshop leaves from the Department of Natural Resources and Water Office, 22-30 Wood Street, at 8.30am and returns at 12.30pm.
