Two NRL stars will help to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle to Queensland students, as part of the Year of Physical Activity in 2008.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Gold Coast Titans co-captain Luke Bailey and Cowboys centre Ashley Graham had signed on as Year of Physical Activity Ambassadors.

“Luke and Ashley have joined our Year of Physical Activity campaign to encourage all students to exercise their brains and their bodies,” Mr Welford said.

“This initiative, along with the Smart Moves program in Queensland state schools, will help nurture healthy habits in our students that last a lifetime.

“Thirty minutes of physical activity has been incorporated into learning and classroom activities in primary schools, as part of Smart Moves.

“In secondary schools, students are being active for at least two hours a week.

“With awareness increasing about the link between physical activity and academic achievement, these initiatives are giving Queensland state school students the best possible start to their academic and active lives.”

Luke Bailey said his ethos of an active, healthy and balanced life was reflected in his passion for sport and nutrition.

“I was a big kid who loved my food so running around and playing sport was a good way of maintaining a healthy balance,” Mr Bailey said.

“I am honoured to be an Ambassador for the Year of Physical Activity and hope to be a positive role model for children in Queensland.”

Ashley Graham said he was excited about helping educate Queensland students on the physical and academic benefits of an active life.

“As someone who stays active professionally I know first-hand the benefits of keeping fit. When I exercise I feel better and think more clearly and this has a positive impact on my entire life,” Mr Graham said.

The players are promoting the Year of Physical Activity through a partnership between the Department of Education, Training and the Arts and Rugby League’s One Community initiative.

Luke and Ashley join other Year of Physical Activity Ambassadors including – Premier Anna Bligh, surfer Stephanie Gilmore, Brisbane Lions, netballer Clare McMeniman, Channel 9 personality Nitro, swimming great Sam Riley, Paralympic cyclist Chris Scott, 4BC’s Rod Tiley, and swimmer Annabelle Williams.
