Treasurer welcomes Queensland expansion by Myer
Treasurer Andrew Fraser today welcomed the announcement of a major expansion into key Queensland metropolitan and regional areas by the nation’s largest department store group.
Myer plans to open three new stores around the state – at Mt Gravatt, Robina and Mackay.
The company also expects to announce a fourth Queensland store in coming weeks.
Speaking at the announcement, made this morning at Myer’s flagship store in Brisbane’s Queen St Mall, Mr Fraser said that the expansion was in addition to previously announced stores, to be built in Townsville and Northlakes over the next three years.
Mr Fraser said the expansion was a major investment in the state, with the stores expected to employ around seven hundred Queenslanders.
He said Myer’s announcement indicated that business still had great faith in Queensland’s retail sector.
"I am pleased to see this long term investment in Queensland which is really an investment of long term confidence in the strength of the Queensland economy,” Mr Fraser said.
“While interest rates have blunted demand, this proves that the long term future remains bright.
The Mt Gravatt store, which will be situated in Garden City, and the Robina Store, which will be situated in the Robina Town Centre, are both expected to open in 2010.
The Mackay store is expected to open in Caneland Central in 2011.
