QUEENSLAND PREMIER CONGRATULATES QUENTIN BRYCE ON HER APPOINTMENT AS GOVERNOR-GENERAL

Anna Bligh today congratulated Her Excellency the Governor, Quentin Bryce on the announcement of her appointment as the nation’s next Governor-General.
“As I said in January when I announced an extension of her term as Queensland Governor, Her Excellency is an outstanding role model,” the Premier said.
“She has been a passionate advocate for the rights of women and children to a better life and I can understand and applaud Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s decision to appoint her as the next Governor-General.
“Ms Bryce has been a Governor for all Queenslanders and I know she will be an outstanding Governor-General for all Australians.
“I am also pleased that her in new role she will continue to play a major part in the lives of Queenslanders, I hope she will be able to join as we celebrate 150 years of statehood next year.
“The Governor-General designate is an extraordinary woman and an extraordinary Queenslander and I congratulate her on this recognition from the Prime Minister.”
Her Excellency has served as Queensland Governor for almost five years. In January this year she accepted an extension of her term to 29 July 2010.
Since becoming Governor Her Excellency and Mr Michael Bryce have undertaken over 100 tours and visits to rural, remote, and regional Queensland.
They have also be tireless ambassadors for our State, travelling to the UK, US and Japan promoting Queensland and its trade and cultural alliances.
The Premier will now begin consideration of the appointment of the State‘s 25th Governor. The appointment is subject to approval from Her Majesty, the Queen.
