Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Wembley Road planning study to ease Logan travel woes

Draft plans for a major upgrade of Wembley Road have been released ahead of broad consultation with the community, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

Mr Pitt said the concept plans outlined a draft design for an upgrade between Pagewood Street and Bardon Road, and highlighted future plans for a reconstruction of the Logan Motorway interchange at Berrinba.

“These plans show the major improvements we propose to make along Wembley Road, to accommodate the needs of a rapidly growing Logan City,” Mr Pitt said.

Member for Stretton Stephen Robertson said under the draft plans, Wembley Road would be widened from two to four lanes between Pagewood Street and Bardon Road, and new connections added to cater for Logan City Council’s future Third Avenue and Gilmore Road projects.

“The new road would feature two 3.5m wide traffic lanes in each direction, as well as wide shoulders on each side that will cater for cyclists,” Mr Robertson said.

“Protecting wildlife from the adjacent Karawatha Forest will be an important focus for the project, with a fauna crossing planned to run under Wembley Road near the forest,” he said.

“Environmental investigations, including detailed reports into flora, fauna, noise, cultural heritage and water quality will also be completed as part of the project.”

Main Roads is also calling for community input into planning for the project’s second stage, which would involve an upgrade of the Wembley Road and Logan Motorway interchange, as well as widening Wembley Road between Anderson and Pagewood streets.

Member for Woodridge Desley Scott said the second and more complex stage was still in the initial planning process.

“Main Roads is seeking comments and suggestions from the community, ahead of a concept plan expected to be released for further comment in mid-2008,” she said.

Ms Scott said the plans were being developed as part of a $4.87 million planning study looking at ways to improve future travel and safety along Wembley Road.

“The future upgrades will reduce queue lengths and travel delays at the Logan Motorway interchange during peak travel times,” she said.

“This will benefit local residents, as well as commuters that use the Logan Motorway."

Mr Pitt said Main Roads was now seeking community input on the challenges and opportunities associated with upgrading this section of the Wembley Road.

“Feedback from the community will help Main Roads further refine the draft plans, and ensure we achieve the best planning outcome for this important road link.

“Consultation started this week, with more than 20,000 local residents and businesses receiving the first project newsletter. Public displays will also be held throughout the project area, and I invite all local residents to come along.”

Displays will be held from Monday 7 April to Monday 5 May at:
• Logan Central Library, 150 Wembley Road, Logan Central
• Logan Central Plaza, 38-74 Wembley Road, Logan Central
• Grand Plaza Shopping Centre, corner of Browns Plains Road and Mt Lindesay Highway, Browns Plains

Members of the project team will be available to speak with community members at:
• Logan Central Plaza on Thursday 10 April and 24 April between 5pm and 7pm, and Saturday 19 April and 3 May between 10am and 12pm
• Grand Plaza Shopping Centre on Thursday 17 April and 1 May between 5pm and 7pm, and Saturday 12 and 26 April between 10am and 12pm.

Community members can also contact the project team on freecall 1800 025 716.

Once plans have been finalised with community input, a business case for construction of the project will be considered by the Queensland Government.
