Work will start soon on the new Conondale Range Great Walk, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular natural features of the range, Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara, said today.

Mr McNamara said the Conondale Range walk is one of four new Great Walks to be constructed at a cost of $6.5 million. The others are at Cooloola, Carnarvon and the Whitsunday Islands.

“The Conondale Range Great Walk will showcase the Conondale National Park and Kenilworth Forest Reserve,” Mr McNamara said.

“The area is visually spectacular with landscape from valleys and deep gorges to mountain outlooks on the top of the range.

“The walk will be a 60km circuit through stunning landscapes allowing for short walks or two to four-day hikes.

“Bush walkers will travel from Booloumba Creek through rainforests and tall open forests, past tranquil creeks and cascading waterfalls, to magnificent viewpoints including the Mount Allan Fire Tower.”

Camping grounds will be situated at various locations along the track including sites in Booloumba, Peters, and Summer Creek catchments.

“As with all of the Great Walks there has been thorough community consultation involving local councils, community groups, environmental groups, Traditional Owners, government departments and other stakeholders,” Mr McNamara said.

“Construction on the Conondale Range Great Walk is due for completion in 2010.”

The State Government is investing $16.5 million in 10 Great Walks throughout Queensland. Great Walks are already open on the Gold Coast, Fraser Island, Whitsunday mainland, the Mackay highlands, the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Wet Tropics.
