Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation
The Honourable Andrew McNamara
Work will start soon on the new Carnarvon Great Walk, allowing visitors to enjoy the spectacular beauty of Carnarvon National Park, Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Andrew McNamara, announced today.
Mr McNamara said Carnarvon is one of four new Great Walks to be constructed at a cost of $6.5 million. The others are at Cooloola, Conondale Ranges and the Whitsunday Islands.
“The Carnarvon Great Walk highlights many of the iconic features that have made the Carnarvon National Park famous,” Mr McNamara said.
“The walk will allow visitors to experience the park’s remote landscape of towering multi-hued sandstone cliffs, sweeping tablelands and shaded side gorges.
“Visitors will be able to see eucalypt forests, sandstone cliffs, and some of the finest examples of aboriginal rock art in Australia.”
The Carnarvon Great Walk will be approximately 90km and feature walks from short strolls to five or six day treks between the Carnarvon Gorge and Mount Moffat sections of the Carnarvon National Park.
Campgrounds will be located at various locations along the walk, including Gadds Camp, Big Bend and Foleys Spring.
“As with all of the Great Walks there has been thorough community consultation involving local councils, community groups, environmental groups, Traditional Owners, government departments and other stakeholders,” Mr McNamara said.
“Traditional Owners have given their blessing and support to this remarkable venture.
“Construction on the Carnarvon Great Walk is due for completion at the end of 2009.”
The State Government is investing $16.5 million in 10 Great Walks throughout Queensland. Great Walks are already open on the Gold Coast and Fraser Island, Whitsunday mainland, the Mackay highlands, the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Wet Tropics.
