The Honourable Rod Welford
Sixty aspiring musicians, dancers and actors from state schools across Queensland are this week learning from industry leaders, like country music star Troy Casser-Daley, in a new Bligh Government student arts program.
Minister for Education, Training and the Arts Rod Welford said the Year 12 students were attending workshops in Brisbane as part of the Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts program.
“Creative Generation Excellence Awards in the Arts is a new program for talented senior state school students in dance, drama, contemporary and instrumental music, visual art and design and film, television and new media,” Mr Welford said.
“This week sixty students from the dance, drama and contemporary music categories are honing their skills and exploring their post-schooling career options in the arts.
“These young performers were invited from schools in metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland so that they could practise, perfect and display their works in a professional manner.
“They have been attending a series of workshops from March 31 to 5 April with artists from their chosen art-form.
“This Saturday they will showcase their talents in a performance at the Brisbane Powerhouse.”
Twenty contemporary music students are attending workshops with artists such as Troy Cassar-Daley and Brisbane singer Kate Miller-Heidke.
Twenty dance students are attending workshops with choreographers and dancers such as William Forsythe, who has worked with artists including Sir Cliff Richard and Kylie Minogue.
Twenty drama students are attending workshops with actors and directors from the Queensland Theatre Company and Zen Zen Zo.
Some of these students may also participate in the spectacular live performance of Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage 2008 at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on 30-31 May.
