Cairns residents now have even greater access to Justices of the Peace with today’s official opening of a new signing centre at the Cairns Central Shopping Centre.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine said the new centre is the 110th facility to be opened as part of the ‘JPs in the Community’ program.

“The introduction of this service reflects the growing community demand for JP’s,” Mr Shine said.

“The new Cairns service will be available at the Cairns Central Shopping Centre from 10am to 2pm every Tuesday and Saturday.”

Mr Shine said the new site would operate in addition to three other JPs signing sites at the Stocklands Shopping Centre, Smithfield Shopping Centre and the Cairns Magistrates Court.

“A fourth local signing site will make it much easier for people to access a JP for a range of services such as witnessing statutory declarations and land title documents.”

“There are more than 1776 registered JPs in the Cairns and Barron River electorates, including 21 who have generously committed their own time to operate the new signing site.

“I congratulate the many volunteers involved in this project and encourage local residents to make full use of the new centre.”

Whilst visiting Cairns, Mr Shine took the opportunity to acknowledge the 43 volunteer Justices of the Peace, who operate all of the area’s signing sites, with a special morning tea and certificate presentation.

“The three original signing sites in Cairns – Smithfield, Stocklands and the Magistrates Court – operate for an astonishing 1872 hours each year,” Mr Shine said.

“That’s an outstanding commitment by these dedicated volunteers.”

Mr Shine said the Queensland Government will continue to increase the accessibility of JP services across the state.
