Don't be a fool, change your smoke alarm battery

Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts is urging all Queensland residents not to be caught out this April Fools Day by ensuring they have a working smoke alarm in their home.

“The ‘don’t be a fool, change your smoke alarm battery’ campaign serves as an important reminder to all Queenslanders that only working smoke alarms save lives,” Minister Roberts said.

“Nearly 80 per cent of all home fire deaths in Queensland occur in homes without smoke alarms.

“Almost half of those deaths are between midnight and 8am when people are asleep.

“The obvious message is that when you are asleep the smoke alarm will remain alert and give you an early warning and chance to escape if a fire occurs.

“Being April Fools Day, April 1 is the perfect date to set as a reminder to change your smoke alarm battery because you would be a fool not to have a working smoke alarm.”

“I urge all families to consider this important message and replace their smoke alarm batteries today.

“For as little as five dollars, you could possibly save the life of someone you love.”
