Minister for Education and Training and Minister for the Arts
The Honourable Rod Welford
Entries closing soon for $20,000 Grant McLennan Fellowship
Queensland-based songwriters have until Monday 31 March to get their entries in for the 2008 Grant McLennan Fellowship, worth $20,000.
Arts Minister Rod Welford said the fellowship would give the winner an opportunity to travel to either New York, London or Berlin for creative inspiration.
“The fellowship was established last year in memory of the late Queensland singer-songwriter Grant McLennan,” Mr Welford said.
“While Grant loved Australia, New York, Berlin and London were also very close to his heart. He found real inspiration in traveling overseas, absorbing music and culture wherever he went.
“The selection panel is looking for a contemporary music songwriter who has the talent to follow in Grant’s footsteps.
“Toowoomba songwriter Greg Charles, winner of last year’s fellowship, chose New York as his destination to write songs, perform, record and to experience all the city has to offer.”
Mr Welford said the fellowship was developed by the Queensland Government in consultation with The Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster and the McLennan family, who are keen to see entries from regional songwriters.
“Queensland-based musicians also have until 30 April to apply for the $10,000 Billy Thorpe Scholarship which aims to help an emerging musician break into the industry,” he said.
“This scholarship honours Billy Thorpe’s enormous contribution to Australian music.”
Grant McLennan Memorial Fellowship applications close on Monday 31 March with the recipient scheduled to be announced in July. Billy Thorpe Scholarship applications close on Wednesday 30 April with the scholarship recipient due to be announced in August.
