Arts Minister Rod Welford today announced a new sponsorship agreement for the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF), with St.George Bank set to come on board as a major partner.

Mr Welford said BIFF, which is now in its 17th year, would be known as the St.George Bank Brisbane International Film Festival from 2008.

“I welcome this three-year sponsorship deal between BIFF and St.George Bank,” Mr Welford said.

“Strong partnerships between the business and arts communities are essential to the development of an innovative, creative, forward-looking community and economy.

“Our Government’s commitment to the arts and cultural sector is complemented by the generosity of the corporate community through sponsorships agreements like this one.

“St.George Bank is a great supporter of film and has long-standing partnerships with cinema programmes in other states and I am pleased they have chosen to add Queensland’s premiere screen event to their portfolio.

“The sponsorship agreement will help ensure BIFF remains a strong and vibrant event in worldwide cinema and on Brisbane’s cultural calendar.”

St.George Bank’s Queensland General Manager Rhyll Gardner said she was delighted the company would be the naming rights sponsor from 2008-2010.

“We’ve been looking for an appropriate sponsorship venture in Queensland for some time and BIFF will provide a great brand fit,” Ms Gardner said.

“Through our support of other premiere cinematic events, such as the harbour-side OpenAir cinema in Sydney, we’ve seen the first-hand benefits for the Bank and all parts of the community from these wonderful events.

“St.George Bank is Australia’s fifth largest retail bank and one of the nation’s top 20 publicly listed companies, employing over 9,000 people. In Queensland, we operate 25 branches from Coolangatta to Cairns.”

Mr Welford said the 2008 St.George Bank BIFF would be held from 31 July to 10 August showcasing quality cinema to local audiences.

“In addition to the ticketed program, St.George Bank BIFF will feature free outdoor screenings throughout south-east Queensland and a dedicated film program for young people called Cine Sparks,” he said.

The full festival program will be released in July. For all festival information visit www.stgeorgebiff.com.au
