Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts

Contracts let for Malanda and Yungaburra Auxiliary stations

Construction on replacement auxiliary fire stations for Malanda and Yungaburra will commence shortly, said Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts.

Mr Roberts said tenders had been awarded in late February, however the commencement of construction has been delayed due to the wet season.

“Malanda and Yungaburra will soon have new auxiliary fire stations, replacing current fire facilities in the community,” Mr Roberts said.

“The asbestos removal and demolition process for the old stations has begun.

“Both stations are being built on the current station sites, and I thank officers for their patience while the construction effort is being undertaken.”

The Malanda station was originally constructed in 1956, while Yungaburra has been operational since 1973.

The tender for the new stations has been awarded to Max Bryant Constructions.

“Malanda is estimated to cost over $695,000, while Yungaburra is estimated at more than $653,000.

“In the 2007-08 Budget, the State Government recognised the need for an improved Fire Service presence in the area.

“This is a win for the people of Far North Queensland, and the auxiliary firefighters, who will greatly benefit from the two new stations.”

The stations are due to be completed in September.
