Gourmet Garden putting more spice into Asia

HONG KONG: Queensland company Botanical Foods’ Gourmet Garden product range was officially launched into Hong Kong last nigh by Minister for Trade John Mickel.

Mr Mickel launched the Gourmet Garden range at the Park N Shop Great Food Hall in Hong Kong with 12 Queensland food producers who are part of a Queensland Fine Food Promotion.

Also on show were Bundaberg Brewed Drinks, Golden Circle, Paul’s Milk (Parmalat), Capilano Honey, Suncoast Macadamia, OBE OrganicBeef, Ozganics, Norganic, Real, Crows Nest Cordials and Australian Crocodile Traders.

“Gourmet Garden is based on the Sunshine Coast and is a great Queensland success story, producing 14 different fresh herb and spice products and exporting them all over the world.”

The Gourmet Garden range of long-lasting, tube-packaged fresh herbs and spices is a Queensland innovation and has been available in Australian supermarkets for the past nine years.

With the assistance of Trade Queensland, the Queensland Government’s export agency, the company is working to secure valuable shelf space in major Asian grocery retail stores.

Gourmet Garden products are already sold in the fresh produce section of more than 15,000 supermarkets overseas. The company is now concentrating on bedding down markets in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

“After securing Queensland Industry Development Scheme funding in 2007, Gourmet Garden appointed Ken Melia of FOMO Pty Ltd to project manage their expansion into the huge Asian food market, achieving considerable success in just six months,” Mr Mickel said.

Craig Agnew, CEO of Botanical Foods who are the owners of the Gourmet Garden brand, said he estimated the Asian part of the business in the next three years will achieve sales of in excess of A$2 million,” Mr Agnew said.

“Without the local knowledge and expertise provided by the Queensland Government and Trade Queensland, we would not have achieved these great results.”
