Brisbane-Beenleigh Road upgrade improves traffic flow

The recently completed $52.5 million four-lane upgrade of Brisbane-Beenleigh Road had improved traffic flow, reduced congestion and improved safety, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said today.

Mr Pitt joined Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead today to officially commission the project, which involved the duplication and median-strip division of Brisbane-Beenleigh Road between Fletcher Street and Boundary Street.

Mr Pitt said the project also involved improvements to six intersections along the 4km stretch, which carries up to 32,000 vehicles a day.

"The upgraded Brisbane-Beenleigh Road has been open to drivers for a couple of weeks and feedback from the community has been positive," Mr Pitt said.

"The additional capacity on Brisbane-Beenleigh Road has already resulted in improved traffic flow, particularly during peak times.

"Additionally, the intersection improvements and installation of a dividing median strip have increased general road user safety.

"Two existing signalised intersections at Spanns Road and Harburg Drive were upgraded with new traffic lights, while intersections at Gardiner Road, Teys Road, Holmview Road and Sunrise Streets were realigned and had traffic lights installed."

Mr Moorhead said the upgraded road would service the needs of a growing area and provided a vital link between Brisbane and Beenleigh.

"The recent population and economic growth of south-east Queensland has been well publicised and this upgrade has been driven by increased commercial and residential land use along the Brisbane-Beenleigh corridor," Mr Moorhead said.

"The new four-lane section will link in with the adjacent section between Schneider Road and Fletcher Street, which was upgraded a couple of years ago."

Mr Moorhead thanked project staff for their efforts in completing the four-lane upgrade under heavy traffic.

"Given the volume of traffic that uses Brisbane-Beenleigh Road, this was a challenging project and the work undertaken has been first-class," he said.

"With work having started in March 2006, the completion earlier this month on time and on budget is a fine example of the State Government’s commitment to delivering the roads Queensland needs. I'd also like to thank the community for their support and patience during the upgrade."
