Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle
A world leader in defence simulation and electronics, US company Cubic Corporation, has chosen Townsville as the location for Cubic Defence Australia.
Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle welcomes the announcement as it reinforces Queensland’s strategic advantages for defence sector companies.
The Minister said the decision by the company, which provided realistic live combat training systems for military forces, cemented Townsville’s reputation as a centre of defence excellence.
“Queensland employs almost a quarter of all Australian employees in the aviation, aerospace and defence industries and, outside of Brisbane, the greatest percentage of aviation defence workers are located in Townsville,” Ms Boyle said.
“The Cubic Corporation is a global leader in defence and transportation systems, employing 6000 people at 100 locations worldwide.
“Currently, Cubic Defence employs 48 people in Queensland and this announcement could mean the addition of 30 new employees over the next five years.”
Ms Boyle said the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry, through Invest Queensland and its regional offices, had played an active role in supporting the operation for Townsville and would continue to assist the company as it grew.
“This is a coup for Queensland and particularly Townsville as the company had considered Melbourne and Canberra,” Ms Boyle.
“The establishment of Cubic Defence Australia in Townsville means millions of dollars for the local economy.”
Mark Horn, General Manager of Cubic Defence Australia, was pleased to make the announcement of Cubic Defence Australia’s new investment.
“Cubic selected Townsville over other locations due to the development of strong supply chains and technical services in the Townsville region as well as the pleasant lifestyle and affordability here in Queensland,” Mr Horn said.
Cubic Defence Australia already operates the $40 million Combat Training Centre – Live Instrumentation System in Townsville under the Australian Defence Material Organisation’s Land 134 Project.
Parent company Cubic Corporation is a world leader in realistic combat training systems, mission support services and defence electronics.
The company’s defence arm produces instrumented training systems for military forces, virtual training devices, constructive simulation development, battle command training and education, operational support; force modernization, electronic warfare systems, tactical battlefield systems and communications electronics.
Cubic Defence Australia officially opened at Aitkenvale this week.
