Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
$15.25 million in safety improvements for Brisbane roads
Motorists in the greater Brisbane area can look forward to safer driving conditions with the announcement of more than $15 million in funding from the Safer Roads Sooner program.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt said $15.25 million would be spent on key safety improvements in and around Brisbane including upgrading and installing barriers, improving delineation, applying anti-skid treatments and installing guardrail and advisory signs.
Mr Pitt said the projects were some of 90 new high-priority projects across Queensland funded by the $54 million Safer Roads Sooner package targeting Queensland's road toll.
The projects span the Brisbane, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay areas.
The Safer Roads Sooner program is funded by revenue from traffic camera fines, boosted by additional funds from Main Roads. This year, the package is made up of $31 million in traffic camera fines and $23 million from Main Roads.
"The Safer Roads Sooner program is about creating better roads for Queensland. It is aimed at addressing the road toll and reducing the number of people who sustain serious injuries in road crashes,'' Mr Pitt said.
"Through this program, fines collected from motorists caught doing the wrong thing are going straight back into life-saving road improvements."
Mr Pitt said Safer Roads Sooner focused on reducing the road toll and the huge social and financial impact of road trauma.
He said locations with a serious crash history or that had been identified as having a potential problem were prioritised for Safer Roads Sooner funding.
Mr Pitt said while these works would make a difference, it was important to remember that driver behaviour was the overwhelming contributing factor in serious crashes.
"For this reason I would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always drive to the road and weather conditions."
The following funding has been allocated to be spent in 2009-2010 in the greater Brisbane area.
