Treasurer
The Honourable Andrew Fraser

The Kowanyama Canteen has had its liquor licence suspended today.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the Liquor Licensing Division had recommended the closure of the canteen in the state’s far north due to high levels of alcohol-related harm and violence in the community.

“I have grave concerns in relation to the continued operation of the Kowanyama Canteen,” Mr Fraser said.

“From today the Canteen’s liquor licence will be suspended until further notice.

“I make no apologies for this step.

“Liquor Licensing is working in the best interests of the people of Kowanyama and are implementing this course of action to ensure the safety of the families in the area.

“The Queensland Government will not support ongoing poor management of licensed premises, no matter where they are located, particularly in consideration of practices resulting in community harm from the abuse and misuse of alcohol.”
