Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Nineteen new Transport Inspector recruits are today completing on-the-road training in the Wide Bay area before appointment to patrol regions throughout Queensland.

The new recruits will fill nine existing vacancies as well as 10 newly created positions.
Transport Minister John Mickel said the recruits would provide a major boost to Queensland Transport's capacity to enforce safety requirements on the state's roads.

"They enable us to keep pace with the tremendous growth in vehicle traffic on the roads and ensure that vehicles are in safe condition and comply with all statutory regulations," he said.

"To prepare them for the challenges they will face on Queensland's roads, the recruits have just taken part in a three-day compliance activity at Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

"As well as providing valuable practical training for the recruits, the exercise highlighted enforcement of road safety for drivers in the region.

"The light vehicle part of the training in particular provided a valuable reminder to the travelling public of the need to consider the safety of their vehicles as we enter the Easter break," Mr Mickel said.

The Minister said the three-day extensive training exercise involved on-road and static operations in day and night conditions, including:

• Heavy Vehicles - covering; fatigue, mass, over-dimensional, defects, and load restraint requirements
• Light Vehicles - conducting defective vehicles checks and registration checks
• Passenger Transport Vehicles – checking basic compliance requirements on taxi's and buses.

"The recruits were at all times under the supervision of Senior Transport Inspectors," Mr Mickel said.

"Transport inspectors have a vital role to play in our ongoing commitment to reduce the road toll and often are required to work under hazardous and thankless conditions.

"In a perfect world, all drivers would ensure their vehicles were safe and properly loaded and transport inspectors would have nothing to do.

"The 19 new recruits, along with the existing inspectors throughout the State, will continue to have plenty of work to do in helping ensure the safe operation of the road network," Mr Mickel said.
