Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
The Queensland Government has announced more than $159,000 in funding to the Logan City Council to improve public safety and help reduce crime in the region.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the funding was part of the State Government’s Security Improvement Program, a $2 million package designed to protect Queenslanders from crime.
“Personal and public safety is such an important part of everyday living, and this program will allow the Logan City Council to install the equipment needed to help reduce crime in public places,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Security Improvement Program allows councils to install the equipment needed to help reduce crime in public places and ensure local communities remain safe and secure.
Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said $119,865 had been allocated in the latest round of funding for the installation of permanent safety cameras surrounding the Kingston and Loganlea railway stations.
“In addition to peace of mind for railway commuters, the cameras will help deter potential offenders and reduce crimes such as vandalism, graffiti, theft and alcohol-related violence,” he said.
Member for Redlands John English said $39,367 had been allocated for the redesign and reconstruction of the Skinners Park public toilets.
“There is a real need for the Skinners Park public toilets to be upgraded and this funding will allow its redesign using the Crime Prevention for Environmental Design principles,” he said.
“I am pleased to see Logan City Council taking this funding opportunity to provide a safer environment for their local residents.”
Mr Pitt said councils nominated the projects and could apply for a subsidy of up to 60 per cent of the cost of security-improving infrastructure.
