Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
State funding to upgrade Bundaberg security cameras
Public safety in the Bundaberg CBD is set to improve thanks to a $10,500 injection of Queensland Government funds to upgrade the current security camera system.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today said the funding was part of the State Government’s Security Improvement Program, a $2 million package designed to protect all Queenslanders from crime.
“Personal and public safety is such an important part of everyday living, and I am pleased that this funding will help councils improve safety and security in their local areas,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Security Improvement Program helps councils to put in place safety measures – to install the equipment needed to help reduce crime in public places and ensure local communities remain safe and secure.
Mr Pitt said the funding for the Bundaberg City Council would enhance and upgrade the vital closed-circuit television (CCTV) system already being used in the town’s central business district.
“This project involves upgrading Bundaberg’s existing CCTV system, which will help deter potential offenders and reduce crimes such as vandalism, graffiti, theft and alcohol-related violence,” he said.
“The current cameras are in fixed positions and this needs to be changed to a mobile position so that the camera can follow the action and zoom in to areas when needed.
“In addition, the quality or recordings and storage capacity will also be improved to create ‘real time’ viewing capacity to the city’s police beat.”
Mr Pitt said councils nominated the projects and could apply for a subsidy of up to 60 per cent of the cost of security-improving infrastructure.
