The Honourable Warren Pitt

The Queensland Government has announced more than $55,000 in funding to improve public safety and security throughout Mooloolaba’s booming tourist strip.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the funding was part of the State Government’s Security Improvement Program, a $2 million package designed to protect Queenslanders from crime.

Mr Pitt said the latest round of funding would enhance and upgrade the vital closed-circuit television (CCTV) system already being used at the Mooloolaba Esplanade and surrounds.

“Personal and public safety is such an important part of everyday living, and this program allows councils to install the equipment needed to help reduce crime in public places,” Mr Pitt said.

“I am pleased to see Maroochy Shire Council taking this funding opportunity to provide a safer environment for their local residents as well as the many thousands of people who visit Mooloolaba on a regular basis.

“The current CCTV system, which came on line on the Mooloolaba Esplanade in December last year, is already achieving success with several arrests resulting.

“The camera provides 24-hour recording of the cab rank and links to a monitoring station that has been installed at the local Police Beat.”

Mr Pitt said that due to the transient nature of the population in Mooloolaba, there was a real need for additional security surveillance.

“This funding will allow for the installation of additional security cameras, that will provide 24-hour recorded coverage of the Mooloolaba Esplanade area,” he said.

“This is being phased in over five stages and will help deter potential offenders and reduce crimes such as vandalism, graffiti, theft and alcohol-related violence.”

Mr Pitt said councils nominated the projects and could apply for a subsidy of up to 60 per cent of the cost of security-improving infrastructure.
