Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Hinchinbrook local industries are set to get 20 skilled and diverse workers within 12 months thanks to $32,000 of State Government funding under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

Hinchinbrook Employment Services’ success in 2007 with a pilot project has had a positive influence on the recent decision to increase funding for 2008.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the project targets people with disabilities who are often overlooked by local employers for the potential contribution they can and are willing to make.

“People with disabilities can often participate fully in local growth industries, aged care, tourism and hospitality,” Mr Mickel said.

“This project will deliver training that is tailored to address the unique needs of participants and proceeds to assist them into employment utilising existing networks.”

Hinchinbrook Employment Services Manager Jason Woods said participants will be trained for work in aged care, tourism, hospitality, manufacturing, retail, clerical duties and aquaculture.

“On the job work experience and industry specific accredited training will make participants more attractive to employers as positions arise,” Mr Woods said.

“This project will address a labour market shortage not being met by mainstream jobseekers who traditionally look for employment associated with the growing, harvesting and milling of sugar cane.”

During 2007/08 the Queensland Government will invest $80 million in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to give an estimated 17,000 long-term unemployed and underemployed people job related assistance and skills training to maximise labour force participation and increase Queensland's prosperity.

Twelve months after receiving employment and training assistance 67 per cent of participants are in employment.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
