In a major coup for Queensland’s farmers, seafood companies and food processors, the Bligh Government has attracted Australia’s top food technology conference - FIESTA 2008 - to Brisbane.

Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said the biennial Food Innovation: Emerging Science Technologies and Applications (FIESTA) 2008 Conference would be held in Brisbane in September.

“This is a coup for Queensland and the first time the event has been held in our State,” Ms Boyle said.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for our food producers to tap into new technologies, new research and new markets.

“Food is big business in the Smart State where we have an international reputation for healthy, delicious and safe foods,” she said.

“Food processing is now Queensland’s largest manufacturing sector in terms of revenue, contributing $15 billion a year to our economy and employing some 43,500 Queenslanders.

“I commend the work of Invest Queensland for attracting such an important event to Queensland.

Ms Boyle said emerging technologies were having a major impact on the way countries produced, stored and transported food.

“We are seeing a move away from more traditional methods of preserving fruit for example, like drying and canning, to those that deliver a product as fresh tasting and as full of goodness as if it had just been picked off a tree,” she said.

The conference will examine all the key aspects of food processing from health and nutrition, safety, quality and functionality as well as highlighting new marketing opportunities for Queensland firms.

“Amongst this year’s delegates will be some of the world’s top scientists at the cutting edge of food processing technology as well as key members of the agrifood industry, equipment manufacturers and suppliers,” Ms Boyle said.

“Queensland farmers, seafood companies and food processors will be able to get the absolutely latest information on new technologies emerging in their sectors including high pressure processing, cool plasma microwave, ultrasonics, separations and pulsed electric field.

“They’ll also be able to meet with researchers, consultants and equipment suppliers and talk about new opportunities for joint research projects and training.”

Ms Boyle said those companies interested in opening up new markets would be able to take part in business matching activities with key representatives from South-East Asia and other target areas.

The attraction of the conference to Queensland was another successful outcome for Invest Queensland and the Food Industry Development Unit for the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry.

The conference, being organised by Food Science Australia, will be held at Royal on the Park, cnr Alice and Albert streets Brisbane, from September 17-18.
