Toowoomba Celebrates Opening of Commonwealth Oval Clubhouse

The Toowoomba sporting community is celebrating after the official opening of the brand-new $716,000 Commonwealth Oval clubhouse today.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine, represented Sports Minister Judy Spence at the opening and said the new clubhouse was a great boost for the local football, baseball and cycling clubs based at the facility.

“The Commonwealth Oval playing fields and velodrome are home to almost 1,000 regular users and host many more visitors each year, including local families, footballers, baseballers, cyclists and volunteers,” Mr Shine said.

“The new clubhouse facilities include a canteen, change rooms, amenities, storage areas and an indoor space for meetings, training, referees, officials and first aid.

“This will give the players and visitors at Commonwealth Oval an enhanced and more comfortable environment, before, during and after their matches and races, which can only help to increase participation locally.”

Mr Shine said the Department of Sport and Recreation had provided $260,000 towards the $716,518 project, with the remainder funded by Toowoomba City Council.

“The Queensland Government is very pleased to be able to contribute to the development of this facility,” Mr Shine said.

“Sport plays a big part in our lives in Toowoomba and this new clubhouse adds to the array of great sporting facilities, clubs and associations that we have in our region.

“While many of Toowoomba’s top sports stars have competed at state, national and international level, it is just as important that we support everyday people in their endeavours to get active and enjoy the benefits of regular physical activity.”

Mr Shine said the Bligh Government is committed to developing more sport and recreation opportunities for Queenslanders.

“This government spends more on sport than any other state or territory, providing $143 Million in last year’s budget,” Mr Shine said.

“In January this year Minister Spence also announced $750,000 over the next three years for Football Queensland and $450,000 for Baseball Queensland, to improve organisational management, leading to more opportunities for people to participate in the sports.

“We have also provided $187,600 to deliver a modified game of baseball in schools and in rural and regional communities, and $60,000 to incorporate the football and futsal bodies.
“The Queensland Cyclists Association will be receiving $360,000 to increase membership in all categories of cycling.

“We will continue to provide the funding and support to communities and organisations which are encouraging Queenslanders to get active.”
