10,000 teachers now using laptop computers

Ten thousand of Queensland’s state school teachers now have a laptop computer courtesy of the Bligh Government’s $70 million Computers for Teachers rollout.

Premier Anna Bligh and Education and Training Minister Rod Welford today celebrated the milestone by handing the 10,000th laptop to Carina State School Year 6/7 teacher Nicole Trembath.

“This is a significant investment in technology which is better helping our teachers engage with a generation of students who use information and communication technology to play, live and study,” Ms Bligh said.

“Carina State School is one of 458 schools to have received laptops since the statewide rollout began in August 2007 and a trial was held in 2006.

“Another 11,000 laptops will be rolled out in the next financial year to schools around the state.

“We are on track to deliver laptops to all eligible state school and TAFE teachers by the end of 2011.

“We are the only State or Territory in the country to provide laptops to teaching positions and it is an initiative which will help cement our reputation as the Smart State.”
Under the Computers for Teachers program, every permanent teacher working two or more days a week in Queensland state schools and TAFE institutes will receive a laptop.

Mr Welford said schools that had already received their computers reported that teachers were enthusiastic about using their laptops.

“Many are seeing their teachers shift from hardcopy to electronic ways of working, from teaching, reporting and assessment to everyday planning and communicating,” he said.

“We don’t just give teachers a computer without providing them with access to professional development and training support.

“The aim is to ensure our teachers fully understand how they can make best use of their new laptop computers and other information and communication technology tools for teaching and learning.

“The rollout of laptops for teachers will help our secondary school teachers engage with students who are set to receive better access to computers over the next four years through the Rudd Government’s new National Secondary School Computer Fund.”
