Brisbane southside games studio snags overseas publisher
A small Brisbane-based electronic games studio has won an overseas publishing deal for the first title it’s developing for the ‘next generation’ of gaming technology and computers.
Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle today congratulated FUZZYEYES in Eight Mile Plains which will have the new game it’s working on, Edge of Twilight, published by US-based SouthPeak Games.
“Many of Queensland and Australia’s multinational games developers are working on ‘next generation’ titles – games designed for the latest versions of computers or consoles due to be released or already on the market such as the Xbox 360 or Playstation 3,” Ms Boyle said.
“These advanced and powerful machines enable developers to make games that have better playing features and more lifelike graphics.
“It is a great achievement that a growing independent company has joined the ranks of larger studios by developing its own original game of this ilk from scratch.
“Getting any game off the ground takes a lot of time, money, resources and dedication. It’s fantastic that a prominent overseas publisher has taken notice of FUZZYEYES’ latest and most ambitious development.”
A dedicated team of 30 FUZZYEYES artists, programmers and designers have been working for the past two years on Edge of Twilight. Another 100 developers from around the world have recently joined the Brisbane team’s efforts.
FUZZYEYES’ CEO and Director Wei-Yao Lu said SouthPeak Games, a leading publisher and distributor of entertainment software, would market and advertise Edge of Twilight in Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe in 2009.
“SouthPeak Games’ strong distribution capability is one of the biggest reasons we partnered with the company on our first venture on ‘next gen’ consoles,” he said.
“The collaboration with them ensures we get the exposure truly needed to make a name for Edge of Twilight and FUZZYEYES in the global games industry.”
Ms Boyle said the publishing deal was a breakthrough for FUZZYEYES and that it would enable the game to be promoted to a much wider market when released.
“This will really help catapult the business internationally and it will boost Queensland’s reputation in electronic games development,” she said.
“Queensland’s industry now has 20 electronic games companies, including some of Australia’s largest, which employ some 600 people. Games studios make a great contribution to Queensland’s ICT sector which generated more than $23 billion in sales in 2005-2006.”
The Queensland Government has previously helped FUZZYEYES attend and showcase its technologies at events including the Supanova Pop Culture Expo in Brisbane, Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, and the Australian Games Developers Conference in Melbourne.
FUZZYEYES was established in Queensland in 2001. As well as its Australian headquarters, the company has offices in Taipei and Beijing and it plans to open a Singapore branch soon.
Edge of Twilight is a fantasy action adventure game set in a world that is torn between night and day.
