German rock band battles to visit Queensland

An up-and-coming German rock band will play at the Quiksilver Pro Show this weekend thanks to a high profile initiative by Tourism Queensland’s European office that showcases Queensland to the German youth market.

Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said German youth band SIKE had beaten more than 600 German competitors to win the Battle of the Bands – a joint promotion by Tourism Queensland’s European office, MTV, Quiksilver and STA Travel.

“Queensland has long been a popular destination with German backpackers and we wanted to showcase the Gold Coast as one of the best places in Australia for adventurous young European travellers,” Ms Boyle said.

The promotion involved a six week campaign featuring more than 70 MTV television spots and trailers plus extensive coverage on German youth radio station MDR Jump.

Ms Boyle said the prize for the winning band included travel to the Gold Coast sponsored by Quiksilver and STA to play in the line-up of the Quiksilver Pro Show at Duranbah, just south of the Queensland border, this Saturday, March 1 as part of the Quiksilver Pro surfing championship, plus a recording contract with Sony BMG.

A presenter from the radio station is also accompanying the band and will broadcast live from the show back to Germany, with promoting Queensland a key feature of the broadcast.

“In addition to the huge amount of promotion surrounding the band competition, Tourism Queensland featured prominently in a wide range of marketing collateral in key locations in STA Travel agencies and Quiksilver stores across Germany,” Ms Boyle said.

“This has been a fantastic opportunity to showcase Queensland, and the Gold Coast in particular, to young German travellers who are always looking for new and exciting destinations.”

Ms Boyle said in the year to September 2007 34,000 German backpackers visited Queensland, an annual increase of 4 per cent.
