Hoolihan's badgering pays off: Bligh

Today’s sod-turning for the $49 million pipeline which secures water supply between Yeppoon and the Fitzroy River was, in large part, due to the successful badgering of Paul Hoolihan, the Member for Keppel, Premier Anna Bligh said today.

“I have had an interest in this project from when I was the Treasurer and I know that while other levels of government have played their part, Paul can claim credit for having played a lead role,” she said.

“He’s badgered me and successive Planning ministers on it. He’s been a great champion for it,” Ms Bligh said.

“Our $20 million leveraged the Commonwealth ($16.4 million) to support the Livingstone Shire’s ($13 million) application. It made it happen.

“At a time when the Capricorn Coast and the Fitzroy region have experienced extraordinary rain fall we must not forget that only a few months ago we were experiencing the worst drought in 100 years.

“This pipeline sits well with my government’s focus on future planning,” said Ms Bligh.

Mr Hoolihan thanked Premier for her support on the project.

He said that once completed (December 2009) the pipeline would provide secure, long-term water supplies for Yeppoon and the Capricorn Coast.

“As well it will have considerable environmental benefits and remove the need to take water from the Sandy Creek dune system,” he said.

He added that the pipeline is the first of the regional water projects in the Statewide Water Policy to begin construction.
