27 February 2008

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure and Planning Paul Lucas today inspected early work on the Vision skyscraper, which will be Brisbane’s tallest tower.

The 79-storey “vertical village” will soar 287 metres above Mary and Margaret Streets and look over other city buildings by 50 metres.

The main drawcard will be an observation deck over the 60th and 61st floor levels.

“Vision will be an iconic building that will change the city’s landscape and signals a coming-of-age for the River City,” said Mr Lucas.

“I’m told the view from the top of this tower is going to be breathtaking and will be of a similar height to the observation deck at Mount Coot-tha.”

Vision will include a street level plaza covering around one quarter the size of the Queen Street Mall, featuring retail outlets and restaurants.

The development have401 residential apartments as well as a separate tower of commercial offices.

“Looking at the model of the Vision tower, the benefits of the increased density of city living are obvious: a smaller ‘footprint’ for each person, taking up less of the available land,” said Mr Lucas

“This style of mixed-use development is will help provide for Brisbane’s growing population.”

Brisbane’s population is forecast to swell by up to 130,000 extra people by 2016, reaching around 1.1 million.

“Brisbane already has a number of mixed-use developments that have proved very popular – such as, Portside Wharf at Hamilton, Emporium in Fortitude Valley and Riparian Plaza in the City,” said Mr Lucas.

“People are drawn to communities that offer a built-in social scene with good amenities and Vision certainly offers that.

“Demand for accommodation that reflects these changing demographics and changing tastes in housing is increasing.

“Melbournites have the Rialto Towers, Sydneysiders have their Sydney Tower and now Brisbane will have the Vision Tower.”
