Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Work will start next week on the second stage of key safety improvements on Nambour Connection Road between Kiel Mountain Road and McKenzie Road.
Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt today announced the work would be carried out by Maroochy Shire Council under a $3 million contract.
The upgrades follow on from the first stage of improvements, which were completed last year.
"Traffic is increasing on Nambour Connection Road and surrounding local roads, and Main Roads and Maroochy Shire Council have worked closely with the local community to identify key areas for improvement," Mr Pitt said.
"During stage two of works, traffic lights will be installed at the Cobbs Road intersection, while the intersection with McKenzie Road will be adjusted to prevent motorists turning right across traffic into Nambour Connection Road.
"Work will also be undertaken on Foley Road, widening a section of it from one to two lanes, upgrading the intersection at McKenzie Road and upgrading and re-aligning the intersection with Cobbs Road.”
Mr Pitt said motorists were already experiencing the benefits provided by the first stage of the improvements.
"Since December, drivers been able to use an upgraded east-bound on-ramp to Nambour Connection Road from the Kiel Mountain Road interchange," he said.
"While the next stage of improvements are being constructed, I'd ask that road users remain patient and observe all roadwork signage.
"Changed traffic conditions and reduced speed limits will be in place at various times during the project."
Work on stage two should be finished by late 2008, weather permitting.
