For the first time outside Europe, an exhibition of Pablo Picasso's personal art collection will be held at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Queensland, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

The Premier said 'Picasso & his collection' would be shown exclusively in Brisbane from 9 June to 14 September.

“This exceptional exhibition will present around 150 works from Picasso’s extraordinary art collection along with up to 30 important master works by Picasso himself,” Ms Bligh said.

“This exhibition includes paintings, drawings and prints by artists such as Chardin, Le Nain, Matisse, Renoir, Cézanne, Rousseau, Miro, Modigliani and Braque, as well as an extraordinary selection of Oceanic and African works.

“There is also a very special Queensland link in Picasso’s collection, with a nineteenth century Torres Strait Island mask to be featured, loaned to the Gallery by the Picasso family.”

Arts Minister Rod Welford said ‘Picasso & his collection’ would follow on from the highly successful Andy Warhol exhibition at GoMA.

”I am delighted that less than two years after opening, our magnificent Gallery of Modern Art will have hosted back-to-back exhibitions of two of the greatest artists of the twentieth century,” Mr Welford said.

”Both exhibitions are exclusive to GoMA and attest to the fact that Brisbane is a major destination for international cultural events.

“An exhibition of Picasso’s collection has only ever previously been mounted in Paris, Munich and Barcelona.”

QAG Director Tony Ellwood said the Picasso exhibition was being generously lent by the Musée Picasso, Paris and curated by its Director Anne Baldassari.

”Master works by Picasso have been selected to hang alongside works from his collection by friends and contemporaries to highlight their inspiration and direct relationships,” Mr Ellwood said.

”This exhibition will give unique insights into the thinking and visual language of an artist who played the most vital role in the creation of modern art.

”The range of work Picasso collected over his lifetime reflects a very personal, idiosyncratic collection and paints in its own way an intimate portrait of Picasso the artist.”

Picasso’s collection was donated by his family to the French State after his death in 1973, and is now held by the Musée Picasso in Paris.

‘Picasso & his collection’ has been organised by the Musée national Picasso, Paris in association with the Queensland Art Gallery and Art Exhibitions Australia.
