$2.4M to improve Queensland school-age care services

Queensland parents and children will benefit from increased quality and safety in school-age care services thanks to a $2.4 million Queensland Government grant.

Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr today announced a funding package totalling $2,446,155 would be distributed between 81 successful applicants, to assist eligible school-age care services to meet important legislative requirements.

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Department of Communities had now provided in excess of $7 million since 2002 to upgrade school-age care facilities throughout the state.

“This funding aims to ensure that Queensland parents can rely on child care services and be confident that their children are being cared for in a safe and comfortable environment,” she said.

“I am pleased that another 81 school-age care services will share in this funding to assist them to become compliant with current legislation, which will include undertaking general improvements of their facilities for the benefit of both the children and staff.

“This legislation is designed to set minimum standards for Queensland’s child care sector, balancing the needs and interests of families and children.”

The Department of Communities continues to conduct reviews of the child care industry and regulations, taking into account views and feedback from consultations with parents and sector representatives.

“The Queensland Government values school-age care considerably and understands that quality child care plays a significant role for Queensland children, families and communities,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“The Department of Communities is committed to ensuring that school-age care services receive support to meet child care licensing standards and to continue to deliver quality child care to meet the changing needs of Queensland families.”
