Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson
Collaborative drilling grant applications closing soon
Mineral and energy explorers are reminded to apply for a share in $4 million available under a collaborative drilling program, Mines Minister Geoff Wilson said today.
Mr Wilson said Round 2 of the Collaborative Drilling Initiative grants program would close next Friday (March 7).
“The program brings government and industry together to fast track testing, by drilling, of geological targets in under-explored parts of Queensland,” Mr Wilson said.
“I encourage companies to come forward with their proposals for mineral and energy projects in Queensland.
“The proposals can relate to targets in under-explored or greenfield areas, or present new ideas for previously explored areas.
“The testing of targets in under-explored areas will provide new information on the state’s mineral and energy potential.”
Under the initiative, companies can access grants to recover up to half the actual costs of drilling, with a limit per proposal of $150,000. Applicants are required to have granted tenure to land to be eligible for a funding grant.
Last year the Government granted almost $2 million to 21 collaborative drilling projects throughout the state.
Mr Wilson said the Collaborative Drilling Initiative, part of the Queensland Government’s Smart Mining – Future Prosperity program, demonstrated the ability of government and industry to work together to fast track drill testing of geological targets in under-explored parts of the state.
“The Government recognises the significant financial contribution the $26 billion mining industry makes to the Queensland way of life,” he said.
“New exploration is necessary to ensure the continued growth of the mining and energy industries in this state and the flow-on benefits to all Queenslanders.
“This exploration activity brings the potential to leverage further substantial investment and job creation in regional Queensland,” Mr Wilson said.
