Premier launches prestigious Qld art award

Queensland is now home to one of the most prestigious art awards in the country, with Premier Anna Bligh today launching the $75,000 Premier of Queensland’s National Art Award in New Media.

Ms Bligh said Queensland’s emergence as a national cultural hub would be further enhanced by this prestigious prize for an Australian artist that uses a diversity of technologies to inspire.

“New media is a modern and exciting style in the art world and this award will go to an artist that excels in using technologies like video, digital animation and gaming, computer-based art, robotics, electronics, bio-art, virtual reality and a host of other sound and communication technologies,” Ms Bligh said.

“I am also pleased to announce that in addition to the New Media Award, an emerging new media artist living and working in Queensland will receive a $25,000 travel and study scholarship.

“These awards combined – worth $100,000 - will be the most significant recognition of new media in the country.

“They will further build Queensland’s profile as a leader in contemporary art, position Queensland as a centre for new media and support the Smart State vision - emphasising knowledge, creativity and innovation,” she said.

Ms Bligh said the inaugural awards would be held this year and hosted by the Queensland Art Gallery on a biennial basis.

The Queensland Art Gallery will short-list Australia’s leading new media artists who will be invited to participate in the Premier’s National Art Award in New Media.

The award and accompanying exhibition will be presented at the Gallery of Modern Art from November 2008 and the winning work, will become part of the Queensland Art Gallery’s permanent collection.
