World music workshops celebrate Gympie’s multiculturalism
Gympie residents will be able to embrace their cultural diversity with a series of world music workshops as part of the inaugural ‘Celebrating with Mary Festival’ on Sunday [2 March].
Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said she was pleased to provide $8000 for the festival’s Multicultural Music Stage, which would showcase the region’s diversity and musical talent.
“I am delighted to support initiatives such as this that enhance mutual respect and an understanding of different cultures,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“The Multicultural Music Stage will promote diversity within the region through a shared love of music.
“This funding was provided by the Queensland Government’s Multicultural Assistance Program which gives grants to community organisations for projects and events that help to reduce prejudice and foster community spirit.”
The Multicultural Music Stage will be presented as part of the inaugural Celebrating with Mary Festival next Saturday from 12pm to 9pm at Gympie’s Nelson Reserve on the Bruce Highway.
Multicultural Music Stage Coordinator Ande Foster said he hoped festival attendees would be inspired to get involved in the music workshops and share their culture.
“As part of the Multicultural Music Stage we are offering world music workshops where locals can come together and help raise awareness about diversity,” Mr Foster said.
“The workshops will enable participants to learn about different cultures while encouraging people to embrace multiculturalism in their region.”
The Multicultural Assistance Program is part of the Queensland Government’s Multicultural Queensland – Making a World of Difference policy, which supports diversity and harmony. For more information visit www.multicultural.qld.gov.au
