$1.05 million boost to Burdekin community services

Services for Burdekin youth will be improved to the tune of $1.05 million with a Queensland Government funded project to house multiple support services in the one location.

Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the Ayr centre would house non-profit organisations that work to benefit youth and the community, such as counselling, job-seeking and legal services.

“This project will vastly improve the Burdekin community’s access to support services,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“We have chosen the Burdekin Indoor Basketball Centre in Anzac Park precinct to refurbish. It not only meets our technical and building requirements, but will be in a location that is very simple for people to get to.

“At the moment, youth services are dispersed across the community. Centralising them in the one convenient location will make it much easier for young people to access these facilities.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said the Queensland Police Citizen’s Youth Welfare club would be housed there, as well as Queensland Youth Services Incorporated and the Youth Pathways Program, both of which help young people to complete school and move on to further education or employment.

“There will also be facilities available for visiting providers specialising in legal and justice services, Indigenous services and volunteer support and activity groups for young men and women,” she said.
“This new centre will be able to grow and adapt to the vibrant and changing Burdekin community.”

The project is expected to commence around September 2008 and be completed by June 2009.

The $1.05 million grant is part of a $5.4 million project to develop similar multi-tenancy centres throughout five rural towns in Queensland. Other areas selected are Lockhart River, Longreach, Charters Towers and Dalby.
