Queensland divers embrace safety training

A $2.8 million Queensland-wide strategy to improve safety standards in the state’s occupational dive industry has attracted 420 divers within its first four months.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said this represented 70 per cent of the estimated 600 Queensland seafood harvest divers expected to participate in the State Government’s Work Safe Dive Safe project by October.

“The early enrolment of such a significant number of divers is very encouraging and a good reflection on the quality of the training being delivered,” Mr Welford said.

“The program ensures divers are equipped and qualified to carry out their work in line with best practice.

“It gives nationally recognised safety training for both SSBA (surface supply breathing apparatus) and SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) divers.

“The multi-million dollar project is coordinated by Tropical North Queensland TAFE and delivered in partnership with private trainers and industry.

“The training targets divers from the sea cucumber, sponge, aquarium and crayfish harvesting sectors.

“Our partnership with IRES Remote Corporate Services and The Underwater Centre is an excellent example of how public and private Registered Training Organisations can work together to provide significant training opportunities.”

Work Safe Dive Safe was developed following the introduction of a new diving work code of practice that outlines legislative requirements for all occupational underwater diving.

Training is being delivered at locations across Queensland and incorporates diving operations, emergency procedures and safe work practices.

Current training centres include the Torres Strait and Cairns with southern locations to be announced later this year.

The project is a Queensland Government Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative delivered by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) and the Department of Employment and Industrial Relations (DEIR).
