The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
AFL helps youth ‘choose’ the way from domestic violence in curtain raiser to tonight’s NAB Cup in Cairns
AFL (Queensland) has joined the cause to promote healthy relationships and tackle domestic and family violence, with the start of a new program for young people being released in Cairns today.
Communities and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said AFL (Queensland) had thrown its support behind the initiative, teaming up with the Department of Communities to develop the ‘Which Way – You Choose’ resource kit for the successful Kickstart program.
“The training program we’ve developed has been specially designed to promote healthy relationship choices to Indigenous youth, and to deliver this important message through the Aussie Rules Kickstart program,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Young people here absolutely love AFL, and both the league and players have been highly supportive of my department’s community initiatives,” she said.
“Kickstart delivers sport clinics and carnivals to 27 communities in Far North Queensland, so it’s a natural choice to tie other important educational messages with the sport.”
Member for Barron River Steve Wettenhall will be representing the Minister at today’s celebration at Cazaly’s Stadium, which is a curtain raiser to tonight’s NAB Challenge Cup match between Geelong and St Kilda.
“I’m thrilled to be here and lend my support to a very worthy cause which is reaching out to young people and letting them know they have choices,” Mr Wettenhall said.
“The Which Way – You Choose resource kit features a DVD with Indigenous AFL star Chris Johnson who, along with the young actors, stand out as good role models for other young people,” he said.
“Chris’ message, for example, is that nobody respects or condones abusive behaviour in the home.
“The message is clear – there’s nothing tough about violence in the home.”

The ‘Which Way – You Choose’ includes several resources – the DVD, a booklet to promote discussion, a help card for young people and other information about domestic and family violence.
