Flickerfest to light up Queensland screens

Arts Minister Rod Welford has encouraged film fans to catch the world’s best short films at the internationally-renowned Flickerfest.

Mr Welford said the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, at Noosa on 22 February and in Brisbane from 28 February–2 March, was also an opportunity to experience the latest trends in independent cinema.

“This is the first time Noosa has hosted Flickerfest, which is now in its 17th year,” Mr Welford said.

“I urge local audiences to embrace this short film festival. It has become a significant event on Queensland’s cultural calendar.

“Flickerfest is a major film festival on the world circuit and the national tour has become a vital part of its annual programme.

“This festival is so highly regarded that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognises it as a qualifying festival for the Best Short Film and Best Animation categories of the Academy Awards.”

The 17th Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, driven by MINI, started its national tour in Sydney in January.

It will tour to 17 venues across metropolitan and regional Australia. A record 1300 entries were received this year, with films from 16 countries represented.

Mr Welford said part of the festival’s ethos was to promote excellence in short film and cultural diversity in storytelling.

“The festival ensures local audiences have access to the freshest trends in global independent cinema and some Academy Award-nominated films from the world’s most exciting new filmmakers,” he said.

“I warmly welcome Flickerfest back to Queensland and I am particularly thrilled that Noosa’s vibrant film community will experience the festival for the first time in 2008.”

The 17th Flickerfest International Short Film Festival, driven by MINI, will screen at ‘The J’ Centre in Noosa and at Brisbane’s Dendy Cinema on George Street.
