Adelaide meeting to focus on climate change

Premier Anna Bligh will travel to Adelaide this afternoon to join other State Premiers and First Ministers at a meeting for the Council for the Australian Federation (CAF).

Ms Bligh said climate change, productivity and innovation and federalism would be key items on the agenda at tomorrow’s meeting.

“This is the first meeting of CAF since the election of the Rudd Government and there are now great opportunities for the States and territories to work together on a more cooperative model of federalism,” Ms Bligh said.

“The blame game practised by the previous Howard Government will become a relic of the past and state and territory leaders can now totally focus on partnership, policy and provision of services.”

Ms Bligh said Professor Ross Garnaut would update leaders on his ground breaking work into the impact of climate change on the economy.

“Climate change is one of the critical challenges facing our State,” she said.

“It will impact on government, business and families and it is imperative that we continue to explore new ways to mitigate and adapt to changing weather patterns.

“Professor Garnaut will provide an update on his final report – due for release in October.
“There is no doubt that as Australia’s biggest greenhouse gas emitter, Queensland will have a real role to play and we must be prepared to rise to that challenge.”

Ms Bligh said the Council of Australian Federation would also meet with a delegation from the Canadian Council of the Federation.

She said the focus of the meeting would be federalism and how the respective Councils could help shape the national agenda policy in both countries.

Tonight the Premier will attend an address from Robert Kennedy Junior at the Third International Solar Cities Congress.

Mr Kennedy will discuss climate change and sustainability. He is the nephew of the late United States President John F Kennedy and was recently named one of Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Planet.
