Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle

Marketing the Far North’s tropical expertise to the developing world

Far North Queensland businesses with specialist expertise working in the tropics will receive tips on tapping into business opportunities in the Asia Pacific at a workshop next week (Friday, February 29).

Regional Development Minister Desley Boyle, who is also the Member for Cairns, said the Queensland Government had engaged former Austrade Commissioner Graham Poon to identify opportunities for Far Northern firms.

“Cairns and the Far North are building up valuable expertise in environmental management in the tropics, in areas such as in natural resource and water management, as well as energy and waste technologies,” Ms Boyle said.

“As one of the few developed economies in the tropics, we are well placed to take advantage of growing demand for this expertise.

“In fact, many local firms are already selling their goods and services to places like Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Vietnam as well as China - which has 16 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities,” she said.

Ms Boyle said Mr Poon would speak at the workshop to give businesses a better understanding of the market and how to tap into it.

Mr Poon, who now works at Cairns-based Kleinhardt Business Consultants, has previously been an Austrade Commissioner based in the Philippines, where he liaised with the Asia Development Bank on behalf of Australian firms.

“Mr Poon has a wealth of experience in the developing world and will be able to help identify opportunities for Far North Queensland firms,” Ms Boyle said.

“Many of the opportunities are in helping tropical economies that are poor and Mr Poon will provide advice on bidding for work with international development agencies, like the World Bank’s International Development Agency.

“He will share tips on the best way for local businesses to win contracts, including through joint business and university collaborations,” she said.

Mr Poon will speak at the free workshop at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort, Cannon Street, Cairns on February 29. For more information about the workshop contact the Cairns Centre – Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry on 4048 1111.

The workshop is part of the Queensland Government’s Centre of Enterprise initiative, which has earmarked six Queensland regions for development based on their unique strengths and key opportunities.

Tropical expertise, regional aviation and marine services have been identified as the sectors that will have the greatest impact for Cairns and Far North Queensland.
