Nominations open for Queensland Greats

Nominations are now open for the 2008 Queensland Greats Awards which are announced during Queensland Week Celebrations 1-8 June. The Queensland Greats Awards recognise Queenslanders whose lifetime achievements have contributed to Queensland in a special way.

“It is important to recognise extraordinary Queenslanders as they play an important part in the history of our Smart State and act as role models to current and future generations,” said Premier Anna Bligh.

“The Queensland Greats Awards recognise a lifetime of continued work towards creating a better Queensland and perhaps even a better world for us all,’ Ms Bligh said.

In 2007, Queensland Greats included: Mr Ashley Cooper AO, Ms Leneen Forde AC, Mr Doug Hall AM, Professor John Hay AC and Sir Leo Hielscher AC. Surf Life Saving was also recognised and awarded the Queensland Greats Institution Award.

Queensland Greats have traditionally come from a wide variety of fields and pursuits. From sporting legends to Queensland’s first female Governor, Queensland Greats are a highly regarded group of Queenslanders whose lifetime achievements have helped to shape the Smart State.

Since the awards began, 35 Queenslanders and two institutions have been recognised and their names proudly displayed on plaques throughout the Queensland Greats walk in Roma Street Parkland.

The 2008 Queensland Greats Awards will be announced at a ceremony held as part of the State’s Queensland Week celebrations from 1 to 8 June 2008.
