Give an inspirational Qlder the recognition they deserve: Bligh

Nominations for the Suncorp Queenslander and Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year are now open, forming part of Queensland Week Celebrations from 1 to 8 June 2008.

“The Suncorp Queenslander of the Year awards are our State’s highest citizenship honour and offer us an opportunity to give inspirational Queenslanders the recognition they deserve,” Premier Anna Bligh said.

“If you know someone who has made a significant and worthwhile contribution to our State, now is your chance to reward that person by nominating them for one of Queensland’s most prestigious awards.

“The Queensland Government is implementing the Smart State vision where knowledge, creativity and innovation are encouraged and rewarded. Through the dedication of these Queenslanders the quality of life is improved for all Queenslanders.

“If you know someone who has gone the extra mile and is deserving of recognition, through any field of endeavour such as business, education, the arts or community work, I strongly encourage you to nominate them for an award,” said Ms Bligh.

Professor Matthew Sanders, 2007 Suncorp Queenslander of the Year and Mr Lars Olsen, 2007 Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year were two of the remarkable individuals who were recognised last year for their tremendous contribution to the Smart State.

Professor Sanders worked to help families all around the world through his extensive research into childhood behaviour. Founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, Professor Sanders has helped three million children and their families in 15 countries around the world.

Mr Olsen founded the Forget-Me-Not children’s home in Kathmandu. At just 25 years of age he established the home following a trip to Nepal where he volunteered at an orphanage. Mr Olsen was also a Queensland finalist for the 2008 Young Australian of the Year.

The 2008 Suncorp Queenslander and Suncorp Young Queenslander of the Year will each receive a grant to the value of $1,000. The intention of the grant is to assist the recipient in continuing their work within their chosen field or the community.
